Moving Tips: Don’t Procrastinate

Waiting to pack until the last week, or worse, the last few days before your move is more than stressful. You will always find that you have more items than you thought you did. Marathon packing is messy, causes more damage to your items, and makes the unpacking process chaotic. Your entire moving experience will be miserable if you wait till the last minute to start packing. It doesn’t have to be that way. Below are tips to help you create a plan and break down the move in phases so you can breathe easier on moving day.

Packing Tip #1: Take Action

Be proactive. Get it done. There’s really no other way around it. Pack the least needed items first and keep in mind where your items will go at the new space you are moving into. Put small random items in labeled Ziploc bags so they’re easier to find.

Packing Tip #2: Don’t Overload Boxes

It may be tempting to grab a large box and fill it up as much as you can. Don't. Put heavier items in smaller boxes and distribute weight among multiple boxes. They’re easier to carry, safer for you and your movers, and will cause less damage to your items. Large boxes are ideal for bulky blankets and towels that need a lot of space, but don't weight a lot.

Packing Tip #3: Do it Right

Your first instinct will be to pack plates horizontally on top of each other. We recommend wrapping each plate individually in paper and stacking them vertically in a box. There is less likelihood of damage from any impact this way. Use cost-effective recyclable paper for the extra padding.

Packing Tip #4: Label Your Boxes

Label your boxes by room and list what items are in each to more easily locate items. For valuables like jewelry, use a code name like “Bathroom/Hair Care” to deter any potential theft.

Packing Tip #5: Make Most Needed Items Easy to Find

Pack essentials like toiletries, kitchen utensils, and a week’s worth of clothes in an accessible place. You may not be able to unpack everything you own in one day. You’ll make your life easier after a long moving day having essentials handy.
